Common mistakes

Bill by sprint, milestone, or approved scope—not a generic 'development' line. Note whether bug fixes, deployment, or post-launch support are included in the quoted amount.

Bill an identifiable sprint, milestone, or work period

Use the product, project, sprint, or milestone name the client recognizes. For time-based work, add the billing period and approved hours; for fixed-fee work, name the deliverable or acceptance event tied to the charge.

Distinguish new scope from support

Separate feature delivery, implementation, maintenance, bug fixes, deployment, and support when they follow different rates or agreements. Avoid implying that every defect or support request is billable unless that treatment was already agreed.

Include the client’s technical and purchasing references

Add a PO number, contract reference, ticket summary, or timesheet reference when the client uses one for approval. Do not place repository credentials, secrets, private URLs, or other sensitive technical data on the invoice.
